Tullio Treves

Tullio Treves has served as a Judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea from 1996-2011. He is Professor of International Law at the University of Milan.

His professional experience includes serving as Legal Adviser to the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in New York, being lecturer at the Hague Academy of International Law and being Legal Counsel before the International Court of Justice. Tullio Treves is a Member of the Institut de Droit International and of the Curatorium of the Hague Academy of International Law. He is currently engaged in international arbitral proceedings.

Publications relevant to SHARES include: Lo Sfruttamento dei Fondi Marini Internazionali [The Exploitation of the International Seabed], (1982), Italy and the Law of the Sea (1997), The United Nations Compensation Commission; A Handbook (1999, co-author), Fragmentation of International Law: The Judicial Perspective (2007) and Piracy, Law of the Sea, and Use of Force: Developments off the Coast of Somalia (2009).
