Ex-Pakistani president Musharraf admits approving CIA drone strikes

Former Pakistani President Musharraf admitted that his government had agreed to CIA drone strikes in the country. This was the first acknowledgement by a Pakistani official that the Pakistani government has approved such strikes. Musharraf caveated that he signed off on strikes ‘only on a few occasions, when a target was absolutely isolated and no chance of collateral damage.’ The admission diverges from the statements of most past and present Pakistani officials, who have said they oppose the strikes as a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty.

China: N-Korea’s nuclear issue is a ‘shared responsibility of all parties’

China and the US vowed to work together to persuade North Korea to give up its nuclear programme and to settle tensions through dialogue. John Kerry said that the US and China were able ‘to underscore our joint commitment to the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula in a peaceful manner’.

Eleven children killed in a NATO air strike in eastern Afghanistan

Officials and witnesses say eleven children have been killed in a NATO air strike in the Shigal district, in the Kunar province in eastern Afghanistan. The strikes were called in to support a major operation by US and Afghan government forces targeting senior Taliban commanders and a local weapons cache. The NATO-led International Security Assistant Force (ISAF) said: ‘The air support was called in by coalition forces – not Afghans’. A statement issued on behalf of President Karzai strongly condemned the NATO attack, and ‘military operations in residential areas that cause civilian deaths’.
