Five states identified as partners in CIA detention programme

In the wake of a 500 page summary report that was released by the US Senate on 9 December 2014, five countries have been identified as being home to secret CIA-controlled prisons namely: Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Thailand and Afghanistan. According to the Washington Post, Afghanistan alone housed no fewer than four such facilities. (more…)

UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants: European countries must support Malta’s efforts and ‘shoulder their share of responsibilities’

Malta, a key entry point into Europe, needs to step up its preparation for migrants and asylum-seekers crossing the Mediterranean Sea and arriving at its external borders, UN human rights expert François Crépeau warned. Deputy-Secretary-General underscored collective responsibility to prevent atrocity crimes at launch of new UN tool to prevent atrocity crimes

With much more needing to be done to prevent crises and protect populations at risk of genocide, the Framework of Analysis for Atrocity Crimes offered a route to reaching that vitally important goal, the Deputy-Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said at the tool’s official launch. (more…)

Ban Ki-moon: UN and OSCE have a shared role in managing regional challenges

On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The Secretary-General stressed the importance of partnerships between the United Nations and the OSCE in navigating trans-regional crises such as civil conflicts, terrorism, trafficking and political divisions.
