Following the announcement by the Australian government to lower the yearly quota of refugees applying from Indonesia, Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene said “Indonesia will monitor closely the implication of the implementation of this new policy and should it have adverse implication to the interests of Indonesia, then necessary measures will be taken in due course to protect our interests.” (more…)

Although not a topic for the board meetings, Russia’s actions in the Ukraine spilled over into the annual G20 meeting held in Australia this year. President Obama came close to calling Russian intervention in the Ukraine an ‘invasion’ stating that they are “very firm on the need to uphold core international principles, and one of those principles is you don’t invade other countries or finance proxies and support them in ways that break up a country that has mechanisms for democratic elections.” (more…)

With the planet and its people facing serious security, developmental and environmental challenges, G-20 countries possess not only the political power to set us on a better course, but a political responsibility to do so, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in Brisbane, Australia. He highlighted the need for global action in three critical areas: promoting inclusive growth and decent jobs, meeting the climate challenge, and providing financing for sustainable development. On 12 November the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution renewing its call on states and regional organisations to adopt counter-piracy measures off the coast of Somalia. Acting under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the Security Council reaffirmed its condemnation of piracy and robbery and called on the international community to intensify efforts in fighting a “threat to the East African country’s stability” through the provision a military presence, and seizing and disposing of vessels, arms and related equipment.
